World Paloma Day is celebrated annually on the 22nd of May. As one of the most versatile and beloved tequila cocktails out there, it's very deserving the iconic drink has its own day of celebrations. In fact, the Paloma (which means 'dove' in Spanish) is the national cocktail of Mexico, it's even more popular than the Margarita! Some say the Paloma was created by legendary bartender Don Javier Delgado Corona at La Capilla in Tequila, Jalisco during the 1950s. While there’s no official record, the mystery just adds to its charm! Modern riffs of the classic include spicy Palomas with chilli salt, smoky mezcal swaps, or even herbal twists with rosemary or thyme. If you’re feeling bold, try this reSIPe with a zesty kick:
The Strawberry Ginger Paloma
1 cup grapefruit juice
2 tbsp ginger beer
1 oz Altos Plata Tequila
Fresh strawberries cut into 3 pieces
Combine grapefruit juice, ginger beer, and Altos Plata Tequila into a bowl. Add strawberries and let sit for 5 minutes. Muddle the strawberries to release their flavours, strain into an ice-filled glass, sip, and enjoy!
