National Bourbon Day, celebrated on June 14th, is a prime opportunity for bartenders to showcase their skills and creativity with this quintessential American spirit. Originating in the 18th century, bourbon has a rich history and offers a versatile base for crafting classic cocktails like the Old Fashioned. This day encourages bartenders to experiment with new bourbon-based recipes and share the craftsmanship behind this beloved whiskey with their patrons. Why not honour the spirit by smoking a classic old fashioned? Using a cocktail smoker or smoking gun with fragrant wood chips – such as hickory, applewood, or cherry wood – allows you to control the intensity and flavor profile of the smoke. The trick is to smoke the drink just enough to give it a bit of aroma and taste without overwhelming the bourbon’s complex flavors.
Try this reSIPe:
1 teaspoon sugar
3 dashes Angostura bitters
2 parts Jefferson's Bourbon
1 teaspon water
Orange Peel (for garnish)
Add sugar, bitters and water to a rocks glass stirring until the sugar is mostly dissolved. Add the bourbon with a single large ice cube, stirring again to combine. Squeeze an orange peel over the drink to express its oils before dropping it in. Carefully following the instructions, use a cocktail smoker or smoking gun to smoker your old fashioned.
